Secretary’s Challenge Accepted for Santa Clara County
UnitedWaySV has accepted U.S. Dept. of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' "Secretary's Challenge" to boost children's enrollment in health insurance. In Santa Clara County, more than 18,000 children are uninsured, often because parents don't know they're eligible. UnitedWaySV will accept the Challenge by undertaking activities that will cut red tape by simplifying enrollment and renewal in Healthy Families and Medi-Cal and support the passing of Measure A on the November 2010 ballot. For more information on how you can join us and take action to keep our children healthy, contact Megan Tracz.

Board Approves Endorsement of Measure A - Healthy Kids
Photo-2_Asian_Children.jpgUnitedWaySV's Board of Directors recently endorsed Measure A, the Santa Clara County Healthy Kids Parcel Tax, on the November 2010 ballot. Passage of Measure A is necessary to prevent thousands of children from losing their insurance and to ensure that all eligible county children have access to health coverage including preventative healthcare services, early detection and treatment.  Support of this measure aligns with UnitedWaySV's 2013 goal of providing 100% of local children with access to routine health care.  Email Megan Tracz if you'd like to support efforts to pass Measure A.

U.S. Dept. of Justice Accredits SIREN
Logo-SIREN-Partner_Agency.jpgCongratulations to United Way partner agency, SIREN (Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network) on receiving approval to provide quality, low-cost immigration legal services to low-income immigrants in Santa Clara County.  According to Tuan Nguyen, Immigrant Services Program Director, SIREN intends to open its legal doors to the community on October 1, with a focus on family visa and domestic violence petitioning.  United Way supports programs like SIREN because gaining citizenship helps local people increase their financial stability and independence through expanded employment opportunities.

United Way to Invest
$2,340,000
to
Fund 44 Programs that
Improve the Lives of Local People

United Way Silicon Valley's volunteer Board of Directors approved the investment of $2,340,000 to fund 44 programs managed by United Way and local nonprofit agencies that address the organization's focus areas:

~ Building adult living skills
~ Developing children and youth
~ Supporting basic human needs

United Way is providing three-year grants, valued at $50,000 annually, to 36 programs run by local nonprofit agencies. The process to determine agency program funding began in February, when United Way released a request for proposals.

Throughout the five-month process, staff and nearly 100 volunteers from corporations and the community reviewed 84 grant applications before making their recommendations to the organization's volunteer Board of Directors last week.

Funded United Way Programs

United Way continues to manage programs that support all people in the community, regardless of income level. The organization's Board also approved funding for 211 Santa Clara County and the Emergency Assistance Network.

211 Santa Clara County: Since its launch in 2007, United Way's a free, confidential, multilingual lifeline has responded to 77,930 calls and supported 900,000 website database searches. Whether talking with a trained call specialist or getting information via its website, people have contacted 211 for food and housing assistance, legal aid, job training, daycare and much more.

Emergency Assistance Network (EAN): For more than 30 years, United Way Silicon Valley's EAN has provided services to prevent homelessness and act as a safety net for people facing eviction, utility disconnection, and hunger. The network, consisting of seven partner agencies, and seven law enforcement agencies, works to stabilize individuals and families during times of trouble and help them return to self-sufficiency.
