Secretary’s Challenge Accepted for Santa Clara County
UnitedWaySV has accepted U.S. Dept. of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' "Secretary's Challenge" to boost children's enrollment in health insurance. In Santa Clara County, more than 18,000 children are uninsured, often because parents don't know they're eligible. UnitedWaySV will accept the Challenge by undertaking activities that will cut red tape by simplifying enrollment and renewal in Healthy Families and Medi-Cal and support the passing of Measure A on the November 2010 ballot. For more information on how you can join us and take action to keep our children healthy, contact Megan Tracz.

Board Approves Endorsement of Measure A - Healthy Kids
Photo-2_Asian_Children.jpgUnitedWaySV's Board of Directors recently endorsed Measure A, the Santa Clara County Healthy Kids Parcel Tax, on the November 2010 ballot. Passage of Measure A is necessary to prevent thousands of children from losing their insurance and to ensure that all eligible county children have access to health coverage including preventative healthcare services, early detection and treatment.  Support of this measure aligns with UnitedWaySV's 2013 goal of providing 100% of local children with access to routine health care.  Email Megan Tracz if you'd like to support efforts to pass Measure A.

U.S. Dept. of Justice Accredits SIREN
Logo-SIREN-Partner_Agency.jpgCongratulations to United Way partner agency, SIREN (Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network) on receiving approval to provide quality, low-cost immigration legal services to low-income immigrants in Santa Clara County.  According to Tuan Nguyen, Immigrant Services Program Director, SIREN intends to open its legal doors to the community on October 1, with a focus on family visa and domestic violence petitioning.  United Way supports programs like SIREN because gaining citizenship helps local people increase their financial stability and independence through expanded employment opportunities.

National Health Care Reform MUST Address
the Unique Needs of Children...

Our Kids Can't Wait!

Photo-Child_with_Flu.jpg

Millions of Americans lack access to affordable, quality health care.  Significant disparities in health care quality, access and cost remain, especially for children in traditionally disadvantaged groups.  Ensuring all kids have comprehensive, reliable coverage is a reform that is long overdue. Our children can't wait any longer to get the comprehensive care they need. Even one year without healthcare coverage could have life-long implications for a child, as well as a life's worth of increased costs on the entire system. That's why
healthcare reform must include a plan that ensures every child has comprehensive, quality, affordable health insurance.

Last year, 1200+ local United Ways established a 10-year health goal to increase by one-third the number of youth and adults who are healthy and avoiding risky behavior.  To achieve this goal, reforms to the existing system must be realized.

United Way principles for meeting children's needs in national health care reform:

Address the unique health care needs of children such as well-child check-ups, dental coverage and prevention services.

Do no harm to children - Congress should ensure that any new programs will provide children with comparable or better benefits, cost-sharing protections, and access to care as they currently receive under Medicaid, CHIP or other programs.

All children will have access to affordable, quality and comprehensive head-to-toe health insurance coverage.

Build upon what works in the publicly-funded insurance programs such as Medicaid and CHIP and reform what does not, including modernizing and simplifying enrollment.

Simplify enrollment to ensure the lowest-income children are covered and parents have an easy way to insure their children. This is the cheapest, quickest and smartest first step to insuring all children.

Develop sustainable financing, both federal and state, that supports the system over the long term.
