Young people who participate in the program benefit from classes and workshops that include topics such as developing living skills, building youth assets, learning healthy decision-making, setting goals, and developing communication and social skills.

United Way is supporting Goodwill of Silicon Valley's Adult Education Program because it assists people with barriers to employment obtain and retain jobs paying competitive wages. Earlier this year, 14 adult students graduated with diplomas and certificates, and on Nov. 29, a record-breaking 16 students celebrated their success. Carole Leigh Hutton Named President and CEO

The Board of Directors appointed Carole Leigh Hutton as the new President and CEO of United Way Silicon Valley on February 27, 2008. Prior to joining United Way, Carole Leigh was the vice president and executive editor for the San Jose Mercury News. She served as vice president of news for Knight Ridder through June 2006, leaving after the organization was sold to The McClatchy Company. In June 2002, she was executive editor of the Detroit Free Press and was promoted to editor and publisher in 2004, leaving her position when Gannett Company purchased the newspaper. Carole Leigh also has extensive experience in the non-profit arena, having actively served on the Board of Directors of seven organizations, including her current membership on the Board of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships at the University of Michigan. Carole Leigh, who has lived in San Jose since 2005, graduated Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism and has participated in numerous professional development activities such as Community Leadership San Jose (class XVIII).
